About

Belleek Woods wraps around Belleek Castle on the western bank of the Moy just north of the town, one of the largest urban forests in Europe, with around six miles of paths through mixed woodland of beech, oak, ash and conifer. It is the town's lung and its favourite walk, level and easy underfoot, following the river out from the edge of Ballina. Along the way are the relics of the old Belleek estate: a hermitage, an ice house, and a wall built as a famine-relief scheme in the 1840s. You will share it with dog-walkers and joggers; come early or late for it at its quietest, and look for otters and herons along the river.

Highlights

  • Around six miles of level riverside woodland paths
  • Belleek Castle set in the woods at its heart
  • Estate relics: a hermitage, an ice house and a famine-relief wall
  • Otters and herons on the Moy along the way

Tips

  • Paths are unpaved forest tracks; good shoes after rain.
  • Best at its quietest early morning or in the evening.
  • Autumn brings the best colour through the beech and oak.
