Rosserk Friary
About
Rosserk is one of the best-preserved medieval friaries in Ireland, standing on the bank of the Moy estuary about 7 km north of Ballina. Built around 1460 for the Franciscan Third Order, it survived remarkably intact despite being burned in the 16th century, and you can still climb the spiral stair to the tower and read the carved details, including a small carving of a round tower on a piscina. It is free, unstaffed and quietly atmospheric, with the tide and the birds for company. A short drive out of town, and easily paired with Moyne Abbey a little further north.
