Kinsale on the water: cruises, sea safaris, angling and paddling
Kinsale is a harbour town, and the harbour is best seen from a boat. Harbour cruises, wildlife sea safaris, deep-sea angling, and SUP and kayak from the Dock Beach, with the operators who run them.
Kinsale grew up around one of the deepest, most sheltered harbours on the south coast, and the easiest way to understand the town is to get out on the water and look back at it. There is a fair range of ways to do that, from a gentle hour-long cruise to a half-day chasing tuna, so it is worth matching the trip to what you actually want.
Harbour cruises
The gentlest option is a harbour cruise. Kinsale Harbour Cruises runs the Spirit of Kinsale, a roughly hour-long licensed tour with commentary on the town's history, the two forts and the boats in the marina. It is the easy, family-friendly way to see the harbour from the water, with adult fares in the region of fifteen euro and reduced fares for children, and tickets bought as you board. You do not need to be sporty or get wet. Turn up, sit down, look at the painted town from the angle the photographs never quite get.
Sea safaris and wildlife trips
For something faster and further out, several operators run sea safari style trips in rigid inflatables and small boats. Kinsale Sea Safari runs adventure tours out of the harbour, including a longer run down towards the Old Head taking in Charles Fort and James Fort, the Old Head lighthouse and the Sovereign Islands. Kinsale Ocean Adventures offers private harbour tours and family trips, and Kinsale Wellness on Water runs relaxed skippered trips that mix scenery with a bit of line fishing and pulling pots. These trips get you out past the harbour mouth onto open water, so they are weather-dependent and you should dress for spray and wind even on a fine day.
Sea angling
Kinsale has a long reputation as a sea-angling port, and there are charter skippers who will take you out for the day. Kinsale Angling runs the charter boat Harpy, a large licensed Aquastar that takes a full party of anglers, with the skipper catering for general sea fishing, shark fishing and, in season, bluefin tuna. Sea Otter Charter runs more accessible mackerel-fishing trips that suit families and first-timers, alongside deeper-sea angling and wildlife trips. If you want to keep what you catch or just want a few hours of mackerel feathering with the kids, say so when you book; the skippers will pitch the trip accordingly. Bookings and minimum numbers apply, so contact the operator directly.
Sailing
Kinsale is a serious sailing town, home to one of the busiest yacht clubs in the country and the oldest regatta in Ireland, run from late July into the August bank holiday. There is a lot of racing and cruising activity through the summer, and if you sail you will find the harbour welcoming. For visitors without their own boat, the realistic way onto the water under sail is to arrange something locally rather than to expect a casual walk-up; ask at the yacht club or the operators about availability.
Paddling: SUP and kayak
If you would rather be the engine, the inner harbour and the Dock Beach are the base for paddling. Atlantic Offshore Adventures runs stand-up paddleboard and kayak lessons, guided tours and rentals from the Dock Beach, and surfing from Garrettstown Beach further west. Kinsale Surf Adventures also operates from the Dock Beach and Garrettstown with surfing, bodyboarding, SUP and kayak. The sheltered inner harbour is a forgiving place to learn, which is part of why these trips run for families and beginners as much as for the experienced.
Before you book
Two practical things. First, almost all of this is seasonal; the cruises, safaris and angling charters run through the main season and largely stop over winter, so check what is operating before you travel. Second, weather governs everything on the water. The inner harbour stays calm in conditions that would cancel an open-sea trip, and a strong Atlantic southwesterly will scrub the Old Head safaris and the angling even on a day that looks fine in town. Build in a flexible day if a boat trip is the thing you most want to do, and always confirm directly with the operator.
