Littlewood Forest
2 km ·
About
A 28-hectare Coillte wood on the N2 Collon road, about a mile from the village, planted by the Slane estate some time before 1840 and bought by the State Forest Service from the Earl of Mountcharles in 1963. The big oaks went for timber then and the wood was replanted with conifers, but broadleaves have been let come back in places, so the walk now runs through a mix of oak, ash, alder, beech, horse chestnut and sycamore, with hazel, holly, rowan and blackthorn underneath. The waymarked Littlewood Loop is 2km, about 40 minutes and easy, starting and finishing at the car park, with two display boards on the flora and fauna along the way.
