Tramore Beach, Horn Head
About 4 km return from Lurgabrack ·
About
Not to be confused with Tramore in Co. Waterford, or with the other Donegal strands of the same name: this Tramore, An Trá Mhór, is the long open beach on the Atlantic side of the neck of Horn Head, west of the village, and there is no road to it. You walk out of Dunfanaghy to the Lurgabrack car park, about 1.3 kilometres, then follow the path through the marram dunes for about another two kilometres to the sand. Fáilte Ireland's car-free guide puts the beach itself at about three kilometres long and tells you that you may well have it to yourself. The dunes behind it are part of the Horn Head and Rinclevan Special Area of Conservation, which the NPWS singles out for its size and its relatively undisturbed state, so keep to the worn path. It faces the open Atlantic and has no lifeguards: walk it, and leave the swimming to Killahoey and Marble Hill.
