Hot seaweed baths and a five-kilometre strand on Killala Bay

A seaside village built around a bath house

Enniscrone, or Inishcrone as you will see it spelled on plenty of signs, sits on the Sligo side of Killala Bay where the county meets north Mayo. For well over a century it has been one of the west of Ireland's best loved family holiday spots, the sort of place people return to summer after summer for the long strand, the chip vans, and a soak in the seaweed baths.

The village wears its history lightly. Kilcullen's Bath House has been drawing bathers since the year the Titanic sailed, the links course in the dunes is rated among the finest in the country, and up on the ridge above the bay the gaunt walls of the old O'Dowd castle still stand. It all adds up to a place that feels lived in and loved rather than dressed up for tourists.

Enniscrone Right Now

Enniscrone weather is Atlantic weather, pure and unfiltered: wind off the bay, sun and showers swapping places by the hour, and a swell that can turn the strand wild overnight. Pack a proper waterproof and something warm even in July, treat a calm bright day as a bonus, and remember the hot seaweed baths are the perfect answer to whatever the sky throws at you.
