Weather & What to Bring

Weather

Mild, damp and changeable, with less wind than the west coast and colder nights than the sea towns. The town sits in the flat middle of the country with bog and pasture all round it, so rain arrives often but rarely in extremes.

Packing Checklist

  • ✓Waterproof jacket (essential year-round)
  • ✓Layers: temperature can change quickly
  • ✓Comfortable walking shoes
  • ✓Camera: the views are worth it
  • ✓Sunscreen: yes, even in Ireland

Best Time to Visit

Spring

March - May

TradFest brings sessions into the Square and the pubs at the end of March, and the towpath dries out enough to walk in ordinary shoes.

Spring in Tullamore starts with music. Tullamore TradFest ran from 26 to 29 March in 2026, with a schools session on the Thursday, a concert in the Bridge House Hotel on the Friday, family events in the Bridge Centre and a session trail through the pubs, and most of it free. Check the festival's own site for the next edition's dates before you book a room. By April the canal towpath east of Bury Bridge is walkable without boots and the eight or so kilometres out to Ballycommon make a decent morning, with coffee at the bake house beside the bridge at the far end. Esker Arts on High Street keeps its galleries open Tuesday to Saturday right through the season, free to walk into. Pack a waterproof whatever the forecast says.

Summer

June - August

The Tullamore Show takes over the second Sunday of August at Blueball, and Lough Boora is at its best for a day on a hired bike.

Summer is the Show. The Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show is a one-day event on the second Sunday of August, held in 2026 on 9 August at the Butterfield Estate at Blueball, south of the town on the N52, and traffic on the roads around it is heavy all day. Every bed in town goes early for that weekend, so book well ahead or stay out of it. The rest of the summer is quieter and better for it. Lough Boora, about seventeen kilometres west of the town as the crow flies, is the day out: flat cycle routes across cut-away bog, a sculpture park and lakes, with bike hire on site. In town, the Copper Still Café at the Old Warehouse has seating outside as well as in, and the Blue Apron on Harbour Street is the one to book for an evening.

Autumn

September - November

Esker Arts runs its Eagla Fest horror season in late October, and Clonmacnoise is closed to visitors from 19 October 2026 to 1 January 2027.

Autumn is when Tullamore turns indoors. Esker Arts runs Eagla Fest, its horror film season, through the last full week of October, and the theatre programme picks up for the winter. The 2026 edition began on 20 October, with five screenings to 24 October. The distillery tour at Clonminch runs all year apart from the Christmas shutdown and is a good wet-afternoon plan; it is over-18s only and books out at eight to a tour. Clonmacnoise is closed to all visitors from 19 October 2026 until 1 January 2027: the OPW says contractors need to close its car park and there is no other safe access, so leave it until the new year. The bog at Lough Boora turns from green to gold in September and October, which the park itself points out, and the café and bike hire shift to Thursday to Sunday in the off-season.

Winter

December - February

The distillery shuts from 23 December to 1 January, the arts centre and the restaurants carry the town, and the canal is a short brisk walk.

Winter is Tullamore at its most ordinary, which is not a criticism. It is a busy shopping and services town for the whole county, and the streets around O'Connor Square and Patrick Street stay full when the visitors have gone. The distillery's visitor centre closes for the Christmas shutdown, from 23 December to 1 January on the last published dates, so check before planning a December tour. Esker Arts has a theatre and two galleries and is the place to look for an evening. The Court Bar in the Tullamore Court Hotel runs its carvery at lunchtime and live music on Saturday nights. Short walks on the canal in town are fine in any weather; the long stretch to Ballycommon is exposed and gets muddy in places, so wear boots.
