About
Ireland's first and longest greenway, around 42km of traffic-free walking and cycling trail running from Westport along the old Westport to Achill railway line, which closed in 1937. It hugs the shore of Clew Bay through Newport and Mulranny out to Achill Island, with constant views of the islands, Croagh Patrick and the Nephin Beg range. Gentle railway gradients make it suitable for families and nervous cyclists.
Highlights
- ✓Traffic-free former railway line, mostly flat and waymarked
- ✓Clew Bay, Clare Island and Croagh Patrick views the whole way
- ✓The Seven Arches viaduct on the approach to Newport
- ✓One-way shuttle hire so you cycle back toward Westport
Tips
- →Bike hire in town runs to around €25 a day for an adult, often with a shuttle included; e-bikes cost more.
