The Octagon & the Mall
← All things to do
About
The planned heart of Westport, best seen on foot. The Octagon is the eight-sided plaza where three streets meet, with a column carrying a statue of Saint Patrick added in 1990. From there the tree-lined North and South Malls run either side of the Carrowbeg river, which was canalised in the 1820s and crossed by arched stone bridges. A bronze bust of the 1916 leader Major John MacBride stands on the South Mall.
