Central Bristol is a mix of flat Harbourside terrace and steep hills: the climb from the water up to Clifton or Kingsdown is genuinely steep in places, and some Old City streets are cobbled. The Harbourside itself, Wapping Wharf and the main shopping streets are largely level and paved.
Bristol Temple Meads has step-free access; confirm current lift and platform access on the National Rail station page before travelling. Check individual attractions directly for lift and step-free detail, particularly the Clifton Observatory's cave and the older parts of the ss Great Britain's dockyard.

It is run by Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, formed on 1 July 2026 by the merger of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston with North Bristol NHS Trust. Note that the Emergency Department at Weston General Hospital, further down the coast, is not 24 hours: it opens 08:00 to 22:00, so in Bristol itself the Royal Infirmary is the round-the-clock option.

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies. Run by Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. For anything that is not immediately life-threatening call NHS 111 first, which can direct you to a GP, a pharmacy or an urgent treatment centre instead.
For urgent but non-life-threatening medical advice call NHS 111, free and 24 hours. Life-threatening emergencies: 999 or 112. The number given is the Bristol Royal Infirmary switchboard. Non-emergency policing: call 101 for Avon and Somerset Police; the address of a central Bristol front counter is to be determined. NHS prescriptions in England carry a per-item charge, unlike Scotland and Wales where they are free.
