About

Dungarvan is the western terminus of the Waterford Greenway, Ireland's longest greenway at 46 km, a fully off-road traffic-free trail on the former Mallow-to-Waterford railway line that opened in 2017. From the Abbeyside trailhead the trail runs east along Dungarvan Bay and then inland to Waterford city via Durrow, Kilmacthomas and Mount Congreve, taking in 11 bridges, 3 viaducts and a roughly 400-metre tunnel near Durrow. The Ballyvoyle viaduct, blown up during the Civil War in the 1920s and later rebuilt, sits about 8 km from the Dungarvan end.

Highlights

  • Durrow tunnel (roughly 400m, dimly lit)
  • Ballyvoyle viaduct with Civil War history panels
  • Coastal stretch along Dungarvan Bay
  • Connects west to Waterford city

Tips

  • Hire a bike at the Abbeyside trailhead; book ahead in summer
  • Dungarvan to Durrow and back is the best short out-and-back, taking in the tunnel and viaduct
  • Kilmacthomas, around 22-23km, is the halfway point with a cafe for a full-day return ride
  • Bring a light layer; the tunnel and shaded cuttings are cold even in summer
