Dungarvan Itineraries
Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Dungarvan, planned step by step.
Whether you have a few hours off the DART or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Dungarvan. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.
Dungarvan in Half a Day
The town's free sights on foot, then a short out-and-back ride on the Greenway through the tunnel to Durrow. Best for a morning or an afternoon with a car-free middle.
- 110:00·45 min
Dungarvan Castle
Start at the OPW castle at the end of Castle Street, free entry and a free guided tour. Get the lie of the bay from the walls.
View Dungarvan Castle (King John's Castle) - 211:00·45 min
Grattan Square
Five minutes' walk into the Georgian market square. Browse the independent shops; if it is Thursday, the farmers market is on, roughly 9:30 to 14:00.
- 312:00·45 min
Lunch in the square
A cafe or pub on or near Grattan Square. Keep it light if you are about to cycle. Quealy's is a reliable town-centre option.
View Quealy's Bar - 413:00·1.5-2 hours
Greenway to Durrow and back
Hire a bike at the Abbeyside trailhead, from around €15/day, ride roughly 10 km east through the Durrow tunnel and over the Ballyvoyle viaduct to Durrow, then ride back. The tunnel and viaduct are the highlight of the whole line.

A Full Day in Dungarvan
A complete Dungarvan day that uses the morning for the water, the middle for the town, the afternoon for An Rinn, and the evening for the town's best asset, its dinner. Time the water around the tide and book dinner ahead.
- 109:30·1.5 hours
Morning swim or beach walk
Clonea Strand for an actual swim, lifeguarded in summer, or the Cunnigar for a tide-dependent sandbar walk on the town's doorstep. Check tides first.
View Clonea Strand - 211:15·1 hour
Coffee and the County Museum
Back in town: coffee on Grattan Square, then the free, volunteer-run Waterford County Museum for the local backstory, weekday opening roughly 10:00 to 17:00.
View Waterford County Museum - 312:45·1 hour
Lunch at Merry's
A pub lunch at Merry's gastro pub in the Georgian quarter; consider the Dungarvan Brewing Company beer-battered cod.
View Merry's Gastro Pub - 414:15·2-2.5 hours
An Rinn and Helvick Head by car
Drive the roughly 11 km loop south-west to the Déise Gaeltacht: bilingual signs, the Coláiste na Rinne area set against the Comeraghs, then out to the working harbour at Helvick Head for the views. Drive it slowly.
View An Rinn (Ring Gaeltacht) and Helvick Head - 519:00·2 hours
Dinner, booked ahead
The Tannery on Quay Street is the flagship; book well ahead, especially in its final restaurant year of 2026. End the day with a pint of something brewed locally.
