Kilcullen's Seaweed (Killala Bay)
Four generations of hand-harvested Killala Bay bladderwrack, supplying the Enniscrone seaweed baths.
Cabra, Rathlee, Easky, Co. Sligo
A few miles north of Enniscrone at Rathlee, Frank and Betty Melvin have harvested and dried Killala Bay seaweed for decades and built a nationwide reputation for it. Their range runs from the kitchen seaweeds, dillisk (duileasc), carrageen moss (carraigín) and kombu, to their Atlantic Seaweed Bath, a pack of dried seaweed you steep in a hot bath at home for the same mineral soak the Enniscrone bath houses are known for. It is the working end of the same Killala Bay shoreline that gives the village its seaweed heritage.
