Local Essentials
The practical stuff most travel sites skip. Everything you need to know before visiting Keswick, from parking to pharmacies.
Accessibility
Museum
Keswick Museum says it is fully accessible for wheelchairs, buggies and assistance dogs.
Routes
The Keswick to Threlkeld trail was rebuilt as a route for all after Storm Desmond and reopened in December 2020 (the western bridge is closed for works from 22 September 2026). The National Park Authority currently grades the Friar's Crag route 'for some' because of rough sections and steps, and the Latrigg route 'for some' because of a 1:7 climb.
ATMs & Banking
Keswick Post Office
4 Bank Street, Keswick
Keswick Tourism Association lists cash machines at the Cumberland Building Society, the Post Office, the Co-op, Keswick Mini Market on the Market Square and inside Booths, plus the two petrol stations on the edge of town. A Barclays service runs in Keswick Museum on Mondays and Fridays.
Emergency Services
General Emergency
999 or 112
Coast Guard
On the fells call 999 and ask for Mountain Rescue, as Keswick Tourism Association advises; you can pre-register your phone to send an emergency text where signal is poor.
Police Station
Non-emergencies on 101; 999 in an emergency. No police front counter in Keswick was confirmed for this guide.
Keswick has no A&E. The nearest emergency department is at West Cumberland Hospital, Homewood, Hensingham, Whitehaven CA28 8JG, open 24 hours for all ages according to nhs.uk; it is about 46km and 40 minutes by road. The Cumberland Infirmary, Newtown Road, Carlisle CA2 7HY, also open 24 hours, is about 48km. Keswick's urgent treatment centre on Crosthwaite Road is usually open 8.30am to 6pm for injuries that are not life-threatening. For anything urgent but not an emergency call NHS 111.
01228 523444Castlehead Medical Centre
The town's GP surgery, as listed by Keswick Tourism Association. Visitors who are not registered should call NHS 111 first.
Keswick Urgent Treatment Centre, Keswick Community Hospital (Mary Hewetson Cottage Hospital)
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust says the Keswick UTC is usually open every day from 8.30am until 6pm, for urgent injuries that are not life-threatening; no appointment or referral is needed. X-ray is available on weekday mornings, 9.30am to 12.30pm. It is not an emergency department, and it has closed at short notice because of staffing (29 days in the last six months of 2025, the Keswick Reminder reported), so check the trust's emergency care hub before going. The trust gave Penrith's UTC hours as 8am to 10pm in August 2025.
The hospital number is the North Cumbria Integrated Care switchboard printed on the trust's location pages for both hospitals. Some visitor listings still describe the Keswick cottage hospital as having an A&E; it does not.
