About
A ring of 38 standing stones in a field on the hill east of the town, with Helvellyn and High Seat behind it, as English Heritage describes it. English Heritage, which looks after it, says it was probably built around 4,500 years ago, in the late Neolithic. It is free and open at any reasonable time in daylight. English Heritage puts the walk from the centre of Keswick at about 30 minutes and asks people to consider coming without a car, because there is only limited parking at the site. The field is grazed by sheep, dogs must be on leads, and the ground around the stones gets muddy and slippery after rain. On some summer dates volunteers give short talks at the stones.
